Gov. Mike DeWine would get to appoint someone to the seat, should the ticket win.
Jockeying has already begun for J.D. Vance’s Senate seat in red Ohio, just hours after he was tapped as former President Donald Trump’s running mate. Allies of Republicans in the Buckeye State began floating names of potential replacements for Vance even before he first showed his face at the GOP convention. If the Trump-Vance ticket wins, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine — who has at times clashed with Trump — would pick a replacement until an election is held in 2026.
And Vivek Ramaswamy, the former presidential hopeful, also put himself forward as a potential candidate. “I would strongly consider it,” he said in a POLITICO interview when asked about the Senate seat, minutes before he knew about Vance’s selection. Some believe it will fall to whatever message DeWine wants to send by making his replacement pick. Still, it is an exciting prospect for ambitious lawmakers in the state and in the House.
