There's little wonder customers are often queuing outside the door
If you're partial to fish and chips you'll have seen how much prices have gone up since the pandemic. What was once a cheap takeaway has rocketed in price with some chippies now charging more than a tenner. While there's no doubting the portion size and quality, it's unaffordable for anyone on a tight budget.
Jackie's parents John and Olive set up the business and at one time had a chain of chippies in Forman Street and Shakespeare Street in the city centre, Alfreton Road, Radford, Bracebridge Drive, Bilborough, and Netherfield. Asked about the price rises affecting the industry she said: "It's very challenging at the moment being in the fish and chip business. You've got the challenges of the potatoes at the moment because a lot of the crops have got stuck in the ground so potato prices are getting high. They have gone up 50p a bag this week.
"We have so many regulars. Our customers are lovely. Some I've had for years. Most are very understanding. They all say you are the cheapest by far and we are." "The biggest change is there's so much competition. There is food up and down the high street, from pubs to cob shops and Greggs is a big hitter."
James Patrick, of Hucknall, added: "People come from miles away. These are bang-on. They're the best, we always come back here."
