Letters about potential State Pension underpayments are being sent out this month from HMRC.

Older people are being warned not to ignore a letter they might receive from HM Revenue and Customs over the coming weeks as it could cost them thousands of pounds in historical State Pension underpayments. In this week’s edition of the MoneySavingExpert.com newsletter, the team is urging people not to bin the letter under the mistaken belief it’s a scam - it’s not.

HMRC is using NI records to identify as many people as possible who might have been entitled to HRP between 1978 and 2010 and have no HRP on their NI record. After May 2000, it became mandatory to include a NI number on claims so people claiming after this point will not have been affected. DWP will recalculate the State Pension entitlement and let people know whether they are due any arrears.
