The State Pension is not paid automatically - it has to be claimed
When the £165-a-week pension is added to their earnings, many workers are pushed above the basic tax-free allowance of £11,850 and then taxed more. And then they also miss out on an extra 5.8 per cent per year on their pension for the rest of their life for each year they defer taking the state pension.
