The CEO of Filippo Berio UK Ltd, the biggest olive oil company in the UK, said olive oil shortages were expected in the fourth quarter
“If you have olives you have to get them milled to get the oil. Last year, the mills were working 24/7 round the clock. This year they are only working at the weekends as there are fewer olives to mill. This shows how bad things are,” she told“This year there could be poor quality olive oil coming onto the market produced by mafias or even shortages at this rate.”
“If it does not rain then the harvest will be a disaster. It has been a tough year,” Mr Jimenez, who exports to Asia, the United States and northern Europe, said. He does not export oil to Britain because Brexit-imposed tariffs mean it is not financially worthwhile. “Spain is experiencing the most severe drought in recent years after the last one in 1993. This time, it is even more severe than the previous one,” Juan Jose Alvarez, vice president of the Asaja, said.
Mr Alvarez said the worst affected products are grains, like barley, wheat and sunflowers. Livestock farmers will be forced to sell cattle or sheep if it becomes too expensive to feed them.
