Olympic hero Gianmarco Tamberi has apologised to his wife Chiara after losing his wedding ring in the River Seine at the opening ceremony. The high jumper was one of Italy’s two flagbearers in Paris, receiving the honour after winning a famous gold medal in Tokyo when he shared victory with a rival athlete. He is now hoping to repeat the feat to make up for losing his ring during the rain-soaked opening ceremony, while he has also promised to get married all over again.

but unfortunately the bounce was in the wrong direction and floating more than a thousand times in the air,” Tamberi wrote. “I saw her dive into the water like that was the only place she wanted to be. A few moments that lasted an eternity.” Tamberi attempted to defuse the situation further by saying he “couldn’t imagine a better place” to lose his ring than in Paris.
