Olympic kitesurf champion Ellie Aldridge has expressed concerns about the impact of a planned incinerator near the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in Dorset, England. Aldridge worries that pollution from the facility will blow across the bay where sailors train, potentially harming their health and the environment. The incinerator, approved by the government despite initial refusal by Dorset Council, aims to burn up to 202,000 tonnes of waste annually, powering around 30,000 homes. However, a campaign group has secured a statutory review of the decision, citing concerns about its compatibility with Dorset's Waste Plan.
Olympic kitesurf champion Ellie Aldridge says "no-one will want to train" at the National Sailing Academy in Dorset if an incinerator is built nearby.
Aldridge claims pollution from the plant will blow straight across the bay, where academy sailors train most of the year.Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy - the base for the London 2012 Olympic sailing events - has been a training centre for numerous top sailors, including Aldridge. "Portland is home to so many Olympic medals but, where the incinerator is planned, with the prevailing wind direction, it will blow straight out into the bay where we train most of the year. The incinerator is planned on land owned by Portland Port
Powerfuel Portland said the facility would comply with environmental and emission legislation, and hazardous or clinical waste would not be burned.
