The decision to have the volleyball player at the summer games was slammed after he was was jailed in 2016 for raping a 12- year-old British girl.

Members of the crowd at the Paris Olympics have booed child rapist Steven van de Velde during his opening volleyball match.

Van de Velde did not appear phased by the public recrimination, only removing a pair of dark, white-rimmed sun-glasses to wipe away sweat from his forehead. The 2024 Olympics represents Van de Velde's first Olympic appearance. In 2014 at the time of the offence, Van de Velde was a budding star tipped for greatness having won the Under-20 Dutch national championships and was in line to make the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio.

However, after a European warrant was issued for Van de Velde's arrest, he was extradited to the UK in January 2016, with the court case held in March the same year. There, Van de Velde pleaded guilty to three counts of child rape, specifically the "rape of a child under the age of 13".
