While many others have written about the Athabascan man, a book by historian Mary Ehrlander may be the most complete sketch of the life of Walter Harper.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -
The University of Alaska professor emeritus’ tale of Harper’s short life — the ambitious adventurer and over 300 others tragically died in the Princess Sophia shipwreck — culminated in 2017 with the release of her award-winning book. “Ehrlander, who taught history and northern studies at UAF, laid out Harper’s story in meticulous detail, including his famous ascent of Denali.
Harper is significant for “his superb subsistence skills, his integrity, his strong sense of identity and purpose, and his ability to navigate comfortably in both the Athabascan culture and other cultures of the United States,” reads the bill.. Ehrlander wrote today’s young people searching for meaning “amid a bewildering array of signals” can look to Harper’s character.
“It’s a successful regional book for us, under our imprint Bison Books, and we’re so proud to have published it,” Rosemary Sekora, UNP’s marketing and sales manager, said in an email. “Bigger publishers would typically pass on a story like Walter Harper, but it’s these types of local histories that are important to the community and clearly they are being read and shared in a way that makes a difference.
