It’s funny. It’s like the cinematographer on a film. If anybody is ever talking about the cinematographer, there’s probably a problem, and it’s the same kind of thing with Philip. He’s taken for granted and gets almost no credit, but the power and consistency of his drumming is the bedrock. Nobody else does a train beat like he does, and he does it so effortlessly, and he has for 30 years.
Whatever I can do to hammer home the idea that there is a light at the end of the tunnel of this sort of youthful nihilism … I feel like we should emphasize that and try and give as much hope as we can to kids. Seeing the article that came out ina couple of days ago about the instances of depression and suicide attempts kids since 2010 when smartphones took over our lives … it’s just such a hard world out there.
I think the kind of bullying that we watched kids get away with throughout our own childhoods has morphed into a much more insidious online thing. I don’t think it’ll ever really go away. I think childhood traumas get passed down between generations. I just hope we can have a society that’s more aware of it and embraces the kids that wind up bearing the brunt of that.
