The former Beautiful South frontman's new record is enjoyably crotchety
Fish and chips suppers, love in middle age, the horrors of a pub with the wrong music blaring from the jukebox. Everyday life in all its glory and grit is the stock and trade of, and the former Beautiful South leader makes good use of his poet’s eye for detail on his enjoyably crotchety new album.is his eighth record since the breakup of the Beautiful South and serves up a reassuringly familiar mix of grumpiness and joy.
He makes for agreeable company on an album that, while covering familiar territory in its lyrics, takes the occasional musical risk. The spirit of The Monkees’ “Daydream Believer” is conjured on the jaunty opener “National Treasure”. He proceeds to go mad for Madness on the ska-fuelled “Quicksand”, a rapid-fire duet with the Scottish folk singer Rianne Downey that’s reportedly inspired by his favourite boozer in the German province of Hesse.
In full pub-philosopher mode throughout, Heaton delivers a good-natured rant on the closing track, “Walk On, Slow Down”. Backed by burbling electronica, he advises the listener to skip boozers playing Britpop. His preference, he continues, is for a watering hole with “on TV” and where the “barman’s half asleep”. It’s a wonderful image to end a record that sounds like a collection of postcards from a world we all recognise but seldom encounter in modern pop.
