In fact, nobody seems to get tired at all, barely stopping for breath on that first leg of the journey, on to Kharkiv – where another volunteer called Phil joins with his own van full of military gear, boots and winter clothing – and then through the de-occupied territories, past Izyum, which has been, and into the Donetsk region, and Lyman.
At first light – the guys having unpacked boxes of supplies to leave at the base – we’re off, driving across a temporary river crossing, put up next to a main road bridge which is still in pieces. All the roads are in a shocking state, not helped by the huge numbers of tanks and heavy transporters rumbling past. I notice a number of missiles sticking up out of the tarmac. “More holes than road,” says Yuri, who is forced to drive in a sort of constant slalom action to get round it all.
