On the streets of Preston as parents go hungry so their kids can eat this Christmas
Over a fifth of Lancashire residents say they won't be able to celebrate Christmas due to the crippling impact of rising costs have had this year, according to a new poll.
The findings come from a new poll of 2,000 shoppers from Inventory Planner. It found that households were looking at lots of ways to limit spending this Christmas with a quarter of households setting strict spending limits for Christmas this year. "It's directly affecting me because of the heating and the cost of living itself of everything is just going up week by week and you just have to cut your costs accordingly unfortunately. Christmas will be slightly quieter I'd imagine but I'm doing the best I can, it's all you can do you've no other choice just make sure the bills are paid and that's it," she says.
For Mrs Sparenberg, who has lost her husband, Christmas was already set to be a difficult time for her. We asked her if the cost of living crisis had directly affected her plans for Christmas. The 52-year-old mum said: "It's my daughter's birthday two days after Christmas, it's her 11th. There's no money, people can't afford it, it's a joke. As parents it make us feel bad, you know kids are looking forward to Christmas, she's looking forward to turning 11 and having a birthday and it's all been taken away hasn't it.
49-year-old Mr Hutchinson added: "I'm a plasterer but I'm just getting phone calls, obviously people are struggling and they're just knocking me back saying can we get Christmas out the way and I'll phone you back in spring. I've struggled."
