UK: One hundred people queue overnight and 27,000 call to try and claim NHS dentist spots
A dental practice had one hundred people queue overnight and received thousands of calls as it opened up NHS slots for the first time.
She continued: "I appreciate that compared to the sheer volume of enquiries today, this seems like very few; I simply ask that everyone bear in mind that these appointments have been secured in the near future, without needing to wait for months."We must work within our capacity as there is no sense in booking in hundreds of patients but then not being able to provide their required treatment in a reasonable timeframe.
The document cites a YouGov poll of 2,104 people across the UK conducted in March 2023. It found 10% of people admitted to attempting “DIY dentistry”. More than half of the group carried it out in the last year and 20% said they did so because they could not find an NHS dentist. “To hear of someone in such pain and distress that they resorted to using pliers to extract their teeth demonstrates the crisis in NHS dental services. The problem is compounded by people being unaware of what they’re entitled to and a contract that is unfit for purpose when it comes to paying dentists for treating NHS patients.”
