Millions of Brits will be tucking into a roast dinner this week - but a health expert is warning against a common veg that could cause issues for some people

A health alert has been issued by a doctor for anyone planning to tuck into a traditional Christmas dinner this week. As millions across the UK prepare to feast on meats, vegetables, chocolates, and potatoes during the festive period, there's one particular food item they're being warned about – Brussels sprouts.

The Christmas season can be particularly tough for those with IBS, given the abundance of rich foods and alcoholic drinks. The much-anticipated Christmas dinner can be especially challenging for those dealing with this condition. Additionally, "Fatty foods like cheese and chocolate, which are hard to avoid over the festive period, might increase symptoms of IBS, in particular abdominal pain related to eating."

Dr Merrifield suggests: "Try swapping out Brussels sprouts for a less gassy alternative, like carrots or green beans. The rest of the dinner table might even be jealous." Dr Merrifield cautions that alcohol, tea, and coffee can all trigger unpleasant IBS symptoms, so monitoring your intake could be beneficial. "Most of us have something in our hands that's not water for most of the Christmas period. So think about ways you could reduce the caffeine and alcohol you're consuming," she advises.

In addition, they recommend reducing stress during the festive period, which can exacerbate IBS symptoms. One doctor offers advice for those feeling overwhelmed: "Remember it's OK to take a minute to breathe," and shares a simple breathing technique to regain composure. "Try the 3-4-5 method, breathe in for 3 seconds, hold for a count of 4, then breathe in for a count of 5. Do it a few times to recenter yourself.
