One Nation’s decision to run candidates in just 17 of the state’s 93 lower house seats in the NSW election is a boon for the Liberals in the marginal seat of Goulburn
Although the party is still running in key lower house seats targeted by the major parties including Leppington, Holsworthy, Penrith and Parramatta, Mr Turner argues the party’s absence in some seats will have more of an impact given One Nation votes “exhaust” quickly in NSW where preferential voting is optional, not compulsory.
Local real estate agent Carol James said the town centre and trading conditions were strong in Goulburn, but the state of regional roads was a source of perennial frustration, as was the difficulty that local businesses were having getting staff. A spurt in buying activity triggered by city dwellers moving to the country during the pandemic had also lifted house prices, and prompted the first swag of million-dollar sales in the region at the start of last year.
