Ken Frank's Toms River South teams were known for eye black on their cheeks and dirt on their uniforms
Updated: May. 25, 2024, 6:05 p.m.Toms River South's Head Coach Ken Frank coached his last game on Thursday. On Friday morning, Ken Frank, in a voice as rock-steady as it was in his prime, lamented there weren’t many coaches like him left in the high school sports business anymore.
Frank has been asked about retirement at the end of every season for the last decade, always indicating he was “still having fun.” His decision to retire now, however, may have been hastened by a horrific auto accident in downtown Toms River last October. On a Friday night, at halftime of a South football game, on his way to get a slice of pizza, another driver ran a stop sign and hit Frank head-on. Frank suffered cuts, a concussion and what he bluntly described as a “broken neck.
What most people think they know about Frank is based on what they saw on a baseball diamond. His teams were hard-nosed, played a ferocious brand of team ball, were relentlessly enthusiastic. The scoreboard tells the story as Toms River South baseball coach Ken Frank wins his 900th career victory with a 12-2 victory against Point Pleasant Beach on Saturday May 22, 2021 in Toms River.“I know I waited a long time,” Powitz said. “But it just didn’t feel right staying on without him . I feel like I’m an accessory to him and I’m proud of the time I spent with him.”
