Her music career launched her to stardom in the early 1990s, when the track “Nothing Compares 2 U” and her second album,, both topped the charts around the world. The records earned her a Grammy and three nominations – though she rejected the award, citing the “false and materialistic values” of the music industry.
At the time, the incident saw her become a figure of mockery, she was booed at concerts, and alleged “blacklisting” put a sharp stop to her rise as a mainstream pop figure – though O’Connor would later call the experience a “rebirth”, reflecting: “I feel that having a number one record derailed my career, and my tearing the photo put me back on the right track.”The New York Times
in 2021: “It was open season on treating me like a crazy bitch… the media was making me out to be crazy because I wasn’t acting like a pop star was supposed to act. It seems to me that being a pop star is almost like being in a type of prison. You have to be a good girl.” The musician continued her career on a smaller scale after the incident, recording a total of ten albums – but her mental health struggles and turbulent personal life would remain tabloid fodder for years. She came out as a lesbian in 2000, though she later said she had relationships with both men and women and “am not in a box of any description”.in 2018 and changed her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat, but she continued to perform under her birth name.
