I am the A.C. Reid Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University, where I do research in ethics, moral psychology, and philosophy of religion. I have led projects on character which have received over $10 million in grant funding from the Templeton Foundation, most recently for the Honesty Project.

Another day, another academic researcher is being accused of dishonesty. In this case, it is Francesca Gino , recently the Tandon Family Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School . The particular kind of dishonesty in question is plagiarism. Two things about this story make it especially noteworthy. The first is that Gino has for several decades been one of the leading researchers in the world on the topic of.

The other noteworthy aspect of this story is that it follows closely on the heels of other dishonesty allegations against Gino. In 2023by Harvard Business School found that Gino “committed research misconduct intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly” with respect to four of her published papers. Research investigators with Data Colada had found evidence which, in their view, suggested that data was being manipulated or falsified in Gino’s research, prompting Harvard to investigate.

What about these new charges of plagiarism? Is it just a case of one sloppy citation here and there? According to, one of the leading research journals, there are numerous instances of plagiarism in multiple works by Gino. This includes a co-authored book chapter with 10 unacknowledged sources for particular passages.

There appears to be too much overlap here between the two texts for this to be merely coincidental. According toGiven these preliminary findings, much more investigative work of Gino’s writings will no doubt be done. We also await Gino’s response to these new allegations of plagiarism, a response which should be taken seriously and evaluated fairly. In the meantime, it is hard not to note some of the potential ironies here.
