Spain, Germany and Austria are all offering hefty discounts on public transport – why isn’t the UK following suit?
It is not only train travel that is expensive. Bus fares outside the capital, for example, can cost more than £5 for a five-mile journey. Spain is not alone in taking radical action to slash the cost of using public transport. In Germany, residents are enjoying unlimited use of public transport for only €9 , a scheme that runs from June to the end of August. Meanwhile in Austria, the KlimaTicket offers residents unlimited travel on public transport across the country for about €1,000 for the year.
