This novel, by the author of One Day, is a celebration of the rare connection that can lift people out of seemingly intractable loneliness.

Last year, the World Health Organisation declared loneliness a global public health concern, with an impact on mortality equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day., loneliness is everywhere. For newly separated Michael and long-divorced Marnie, it is a central feature of their lives. However, their mutual friend Cleo is not having it and she organises a multi-day hike with a couple of other pals in a bid to bring people together.

While their initial interactions are somewhat stilted, they soon settle into an unlikely groove, if only scratching the surface, as they trade playful barbs, listen to each other’s music and cautiously piece together their backstories.
