The play is the first of four productions planned at the Chula Vista theater this year
As America's economic and existential balance have wobbled over the past decade, San Diego theaters have frequently turned to the plays of Samuel D. Hunter for answers. Hunter's plays, mostly set in his native northern Idaho, are about lonely people he described as living on “the losing end of American life' in small, nondescript towns overrun with strip malls and big-box stores.
They've prayed for success, trained in Arabic, practiced role-playing and are now packing for the trip which will will be a four-month round-trip for everyone but the central character, Josh, who has booked a one-way ticket. His sister, who left the family's extremist faith years before, shows up to try and talk him out of his plans. 'It's a beautiful ensemble play,' Darvas said.
