Eric Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, attends a commemoration to celebrate the birthday of Eric Garner at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn. Garner, a black man, was killed in 2014 by police officer Daniel Pantaleo in Staten Island after he put him in a prohibited chokehold.
Organizers say the work is grounded by a creative team including activist Shamell Bell; Garner's mother, Gwen Carr; and a group of mothers who have lost their children to police violence., executive director of the Hop, told Axios: "What we hope people walk away with...is that change, resistance and healing is modeled by the mothers."
