Nottingham's tram network has regularly been in a metaphorical, and sometimes literal, state of derailment in recent months, writes OliverPridmore
As the UK steers itself though unprecedented economic difficulties, individual pleas for Government support can often be lost in the nationwide chorus of cries for help. But one such plea from Nottingham this week highlights the existential problem being faced by a critical part of the city's infrastructure.
Security concerns were raised in June after a tragic and fatal stabbing on the tram network, with high-visibility police patrols having been introduced across the network for a full week afterwards. Overall, it's been incredibly difficult for Nottingham's tram operators to try and focus on their post-pandemic recovery.
There is certainly huge merit in this argument, and it was very flippant of the Department for Transport to seemingly rule out further support for trams just days after the roads minister was in Nottingham. But whilst this further support is something the Government should take more time to consider, capping fares cannot be the only answer to securing the future of trams in Nottingham.
Even those companies which have committed to maintaining a physical office in Nottingham are being incredibly flexible when it comes to how often their employees need to be in it. For all public transport operators in cities such as Nottingham, it's clear that this core base of customers is nothing like as reliable as it once was.
