When most people hear the term “IoT,” or the Internet of Things, they likely think of the wave of “smart devices” that have become part of our everyday lives in recent years. We can now remotely adjust our home thermostats or check our doorbell cameras from smartphone apps, control connected appliances or lighting systems with voice commands, and monitor our physical activity, sleep patterns or glucose levels with wearable trackers.
Many of the customers we serve are high bandwidth and high traffic, but the IoT is actually very low bandwidth. Each device may only transmit a small amount of data, but they do so continuously, and IoT systems must manage a massive number of data sources at all times. If you are an IoT provider, you need to think carefully about your foundationalto make sure they are resilient, reliable and fast.
The last thing you want in the IoT is a service disruption. If a business can’t tell if a critical system is on or off or if a doctor isn’t receiving updates from a patient’s medical device, there could be serious consequences. You need to build redundancies into your infrastructure so you never lose connectivity. If you work with multiple network providers, for example, you can count on your backup provider if one network goes down.
We still haven’t tapped the full potential of the IoT, but I believe it will continue to play a significant role in enterprises across industries. By prioritizing speed, resilience and reliability in your IoT networks, you can be prepared for whatever comes next.
