Edward Screven, Oracle's chief corporate architect and a key figure in the company's open source strategy, is retiring after an impressive 37-year tenure. His departure marks the end of an era for Oracle, which he significantly shaped through his leadership of open source initiatives.
One of Oracle 's longest-serving senior team members, chief corporate architect Edward Screven , has announced plans to retire. Screven joined Oracle in 1986 and is known for leading the company's open source strategy since the 2009 acquisition of Sun Microsystems, which brought Oracle Java and MySQL. According to an official Oracle statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Screven notified the company of his retirement on January 8th, intending to leave by the end of February.
He will assist with the transition of his responsibilities until then and will continue to serve on the Oracle board. Reporting to executive chairman and chief technical officer Larry Ellison, Screven has been responsible for driving technology and architecture decisions across all Oracle products, ensuring product development aligns with the company's overall strategy. As of September last year, Screven owned 3.367 million shares in Oracle, making him the fourth-largest individual shareholder behind co-founder Ellison, CEO Safra Catz, and vice chairman Jeffrey Henley. Reports indicate Screven earned approximately $21 million in 2024, including a $900,000 salary and around $17.4 million in stock awards. This represents a fraction of Oracle's annual revenue, which is roughly $53 billion.Oracle describes Screven's role as leading teams that drive innovative product strategy, engineering, operations, sales, and technical support for a wide range of products. He's responsible for Oracle Labs, which identifies, explores, and transfers new technologies with the potential to significantly benefit Oracle and its customers. As an Oracle veteran, he also manages the company's open-source businesses, encompassing Linux, virtualization, and MySQL. Recent concerns have been raised about Oracle's focus on Heatwave, its proprietary analytics database built on MySQL, which Screven also leads.
