Orange had the best showing of Northeast Ohio schools at Friday's OHSAA boys tennis state finals.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Orange almost swept singles and doubles for the second straight year on Friday at the Division II OHSAA boys tennis state tournament. It had to settle for runner-up finishes but still had the top performances of Northeast Ohio schools.
Orange senior Chika Nwaozuzu was runner-up in the singles tournament, losing 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, to Bexley freshman Henry Lessard in the final. In the doubles final, seniors Gabi Kalir and Ace Bloom were topped by Ethan Remy and Dylan Catanese of Lexington, 6-2, 7-5. Nwaozuzu and Kalir teamed up to win the doubles state title last season. Nwaozuzu made it four straight years that Orange was represented in the singles state final. Ben Pomerantz, who graduated last year, accounted for the other three, including titles the last two years.
The only other Northeast Ohio school to reach a top-four finish was in Division I doubles, where Westlake junior Xander Jhaveri and senior Rohit Jain topped a team from Cincinnati Sycamore in the third-place match, 6-3, 6-4. Jhaveri and Jain had lost in the semifinals to the eventual state champs, another team from Sycamore, 7-5, 6-2.
