Orbex , a rocket manufacturer based in Forres, Moray, has decided to pause the construction of a spaceport in Sutherland to focus on launch operations in Shetland . Although the company will retain the lease on the Sutherland site, it is not ruling out future development. The decision has disappointed Highland and Islands Enterprise (HIE), which has provided millions of pounds of funding for the Sutherland Spaceport project.
The Sutherland Spaceport was granted planning permission in November 2020, and some initial construction work has already begun. In contrast, the SaxaVord Spaceport, which is at a more advanced stage, has already conducted engine tests and hopes to have launches in 2025. Orbex chief executive Phil Chambers believes that this decision will help them achieve a first launch in 2025, while SaxaVord Spaceport CEO Frank Strang stated that Orbex starting operations from SaxaVord Spaceport makes sense given the site's advanced stage of development
