Call for new funding for councils
Uncertainty over the future of Ormskirk and Skelmersdale swimming pools and funding for council-owned leisure centres were highlighted by West Lancashire MP Ashley Dalton at Westminster.
But some councillors wanted to delay the consultation until the winter when more financial information might be available from the new government. And protesters lobbied the council to keep the two pools open until replacements are built. In a meeting about West Lancashire with government minister Stephanie Peacock MP, Ms Dalton spoke about the important of swimming to young and old, and, more widely, of the benefits of physical activity to public health and the NHS. Learning to swim is especially important for children and schools, she said.
