Angus Kinnear was speaking exclusively to The Square Ball, reflecting on Leeds United's transfer window and discussing what the future might hold
With the transfer window closed and Daniel Farke’s squad finally settled, Leeds United chief executive Angus Kinnear has been speaking honestly and openly to The Square Ball this week. The full, in-depth interview can be seen here, but here are a few bits we found to be particularly interesting.
Brighton have managed to sustain Premier League status with savvy recruitment and hiring, relying heavily on data, over the last few years and after making their way up through the leagues, they are now competing with the richest clubs in Europe. That long-term approach of running the club well without taking unnecessary risks, while quietly building the foundations to eventually build on, in terms of recruitment, infrastructure and youth, is admired by Kinnear and the 49ers, it seems.
Of course, the proof will be in the pudding with Farke, but he’s won a lot of credit so far just through his integrity and transparency when speaking to the press. Both Farke and Kinnear have made the point that the winger is desperate to play for Leeds and that sort of attitude and passion goes a long way at Elland Road. The CEO did admit that Joseph Paintsil was someone the club made a push for, but a deal couldn’t be done.
