Her first job was in a pharmacy but she was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art at the age of 18.She went on to win the Oscar for Best Actress for Women in Love in 1970 and again for film A Touch of Class in 1973. She twice played Queen Elizabeth I but also loved lighthearted stuff, famously appearing alongside “utter pros” Morecambe and Wise.
