The Taylor Swift row showcases the British media at its most preposterous
is the most unimaginable godawful bilge. It is baseless. It is inane. It erodes the reputation of those who take it seriously far more than those supposedly involved in it. It really is stupid beyond any normal range of expectation.
Indeed, Swift herself spoke openly about it at the time. “My team and I worked hand in hand with stadium staff and British authorities every day,” she said, “and I want to thank them for everything they did for us.”, which was itself triggered by an attack on a Swift-themed dance class. And, of course, they came after the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing during an Ariana Grande concert.
And yet somehow, through the press’s fevered imagination, this is supposed to be some sort of scandal. The fact that Keir Starmer took free tickets to go to her show and then met her briefly afterwards is treated as evidence of some high-level stitch up.screamed today. Chucking the suffix “gate” onto any story is grating at the best of times, but here it is so absurd that it dissolves the very concept of political language.
