D-Day, June 6th 1944.D-Day was the beginning of the end for the Axis powers, and a day that freedom lovers of the world shall never forget. Brave soldiers from America, Britain, Canada and all the Allied Nations embarked on Operation Overlord. After crossing the English Channel they attacked beaches codenamed Utah, Omaha, Sword, Gold, and Juno. The operation was the largest amphibious invasion in history.
Omaha Beach was nearly a disaster, Robert Citino, distinguished fellow at The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, told me via email. At four of the five beaches, the Allies got ashore in relatively good shape, says Citino. Between machine gun fire at Omaha was heavy from the start, killing hundreds of U.S. soldiers in the opening minutes of the landing, he says.
“When they come, it will be at high water,” German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel told his troops time and again, Bruce Parker notes in his 2011 article in. So, beginning in February 1944, Rommel had thousands of underwater obstacles built and positioned to be covered by mid-tide and, unseen, rip out the bottoms of the landing craft, he notes. But Allied aerial reconnaissance soon spotted the obstacles and planned accordingly, Parker writes.
