'Without doubt the most difficult time for me and the force as a whole was The Clutha'
Revellers were packed into one of Glasgow’s busiest pubs, The Clutha in Stockwell Street, enjoying an evening of laughter, and merriment, when a force helicopter in the city’s skies ran out of fuel and plunged into the bar.
Seven people who were inside the pub lost their lives, with another 31 injured. The crew of the chopper, pilot David Traill and police constables Kirsty Nelis and Tony Collins, were also tragically killed. He told the Glasgow Times: “Without doubt the most difficult time for me and the force as a whole was The Clutha. Police“These were our colleagues, people who had gone to work to serve the city and never got to go home.
“What I do remember though was the incredible sense of togetherness that emerged in the wake of the tragedy – it was like everyone united, everyone felt the same sense of loss and the outpouring of grief from the public proved that we were all hurting. It was a terrible tragedy, but it was also one that truly brought the city together.
“Sadly as a senior police officer, times of the upmost tragedy are often when the officers under your command really step forward and shine. I was proud of all those who worked through The Clutha, from the night of the crash right through the aftermath. “It is part of the job and our officers all know that when things like The Clutha happen, people need the strength and public reassurance that we have a duty to provide. That night will forever be etched in the memory of everyone who has, or still does, serve with Police Scotland.”
