After a worldwide search for a stem cell donor for their infant son, Helen and David Millward found help in the most unlikely place

When Miles Millward was born in February 2020, he seemed to be a perfectly healthy baby boy. However, doctors soon spotted six tiny bruises on his chest – an early warning sign that something was seriously wrong.and extensive testing, Miles was diagnosed with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome , a rare and life-threatening genetic condition that severely compromises the immune system.“It was every parent’s worst nightmare,” says Helen, 39, from Tenbury, Worcestershire.

“I wasn’t sure if he’d want to meet, but I asked, and to my relief he said yes. We met a few days later, and Jake shared how he’d signed up to be a stem cell donor during his fresher’s week at university. So, to properly thank Jake, David and Helen asked him to be Miles’ godfather – and he happily accepted.

“We’ve told Miles that Jake is the man who helped him get better, so now he calls him Dr Jake because he thinks we mean he is a doctor. Of course, when he is older we will explain everything to him properly, but for now we are letting him enjoy being a carefree four-year-old.”which means there’s a 50 per cent chance of any of his siblings having the same issues.
