The footage, widely shared on social media, captures the unidentified individual violently kicking six golden candelabras from the altar of St. Peter's Basilica yesterday evening. His rampage continued beneath the Baldachin canopy, where he trampled the pristine white linen and pulled the cloth across.
Horrified tourists watched as the man desecrated the place of worship, with security staff rushing to apprehend him before he could inflict further damage. \The altar in question is considered one of the holiest sites in Christianity, built above the tomb of Saint Peter, traditionally recognized as one of Jesus Christ's Twelve Apostles. It is covered by the 29-meter Baldachin, a structure comprising four bronze columns and a canopy designed by Italian sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. As the video gains traction online, many angered onlookers have condemned the vandal as 'disgusting' for damaging this sacred site. Comments range from expressions of disgust and calls for divine forgiveness to lamentations about the lack of respect for both religious and artistic heritage. \St. Peter's Basilica, initially constructed in 1506 after its predecessor was demolished, is a major pilgrimage destination for Christians worldwide.
