Outrageous.
‘More should’ve been done to make sure the students recognize the severity of the symbols they were using. It is not something funny. It’s a very, very serious situation.’On Monday, students were encouraged to wear blue to show solidarity with the city’s Jewish community. Some expressed surprise and disgust toward their classmates’ actions.
‘Seeing my peers celebrating — not only taking the time to carefully lay out a symbol like that but to then do the salute — and smiling and laughing while they’re doing it; and that no one thought it was a bad idea is pretty shocking to me and bothers me a lot,’ Sam Quattrociocchi, a high school senior, told reporters.Bianca Lutz, 16, toldthat she was ‘extremely disturbed by the ignorance of those at the party’ and added that some of her Jewish friends felt threatened.
School officials announced that they are investigating the incident, not only for the anti-Semitic context, but the underage drinking as well. ‘We were recently made aware of social media postings involving some students who created inappropriate anti-Semitic symbols, and possible underage drinking. While these actions did not occur on any school campus or school function, we condemn all acts of anti-Semitism and hate in all their forms,’ said Newport-Mesa Superintendent Fred Navarro.
