One high street branch is set to close every day this year - use our postcode checker to see if any near you are going
Charities and politicians have voiced concern after more than 100 bank closures were announced in the last few weeks. During March, the closure of 47 branches of NatWest, 22 branches of Halifax, and 21 Lloyds were announced. Bank of Scotland also said it was shutting 10 branches, and RBS one branch.
London has been hit particularly hard with the loss of 64 banks this year, but the closures have hit every part of the UK. The South East will lose 47 banks, Scotland 36, 34 will close in Yorkshire and the Humber, 25 in Wales and 18 in Northern Ireland.Announcing the closures on its website, NatWest said: “Banking has changed dramatically in recent years, with an increased demand for mobile and online services, as our customers benefit from a faster and easier way to bank.
“Because of this, we may sometimes have a Community Banker visit the area after the branch closes. Or as part of an independent review, a Banking Hub may be set up in a nearby location.” The party’s five point plan aiming to “rejuvenate” high street shopping includes, tackling anti-social behaviour and shoplifting by allowing investigation of shoplifting worth under £200, introducing banking hubs to tackle the decline of in-person bank services, introducing new laws to end late payments and revamping empty or boarded up retail space.
When closures leave communities without any local bank, banking hubs or free ATMs are set up to fill the gap.
