Nearly two dozen animals were discovered in a building in downtown Rochester last week, sparking an investigation from the Humane Society of Greater Rochester.
by Steven Pappas22 animals were rescued from this room in a building in downtown Rochester Friday, April 12, 2024, according to officials. An investigation is underway.
A total of 22 exotic pets, including geckos, a tortoise, snakes and more, were found in poor condition in a room in that building.Humane law enforcement found the animals after the tenant was evicted from the property and left their pets behind. All told, those 22 animals were left in what was described as "dehydrated and emaciated" states. One of those animals was found dead.
“My understanding is that this location was presenting as an exotic pet rescue, so there can be this many animals,” Zeh said. “It’s really about care, and it’s also the fact that they did get evicted and left the animals behind.”
