Over 4,500 Scots died waiting for a lifeline benefit to help with winter fuel costs
. Social Security Scotland is now looking to see if the £50 Winter Heating Payment can be given to the next of kin.

The £50 is an automatic yearly sum and replaces the DWP’s Cold Weather Payment, which was dependent on cold temperatures. Scottish politics Lib Dem Finance spokesperson John Ferry said: "This is horrible news. The thought that people's final days may have been cold and miserable should send shivers through any right-thinking person. The Scottish Government had several months to get these payments out the door to those who needed them.
