The marmalade-sweet decency of the first two films endures but we have now reached cinematic childcare
Marmalade is moreish, but not as much as money. So it is that 10 years after the delightful Paddington , and seven on from the even more lovely Paddington 2 , we find ourselves greeting Paddington in Peru. Third time is rarely a charm for a sequel, and the movie arrives to a near-audible jangle of nerves, with debut director Dougal Wilson handed the gig after original mastermind Paul King exited to make Wonka instead.
Make way for an elaborate plot point that spirits the cast to the South America of Paddington’s birth. “It’s the perfect idea,” the actors declare as one around the kitchen table, and seeing their slightly rictus grins, it is hard not to think of the production meeting where the pitch was finally greenlit. Peru, though, remains more alliterative than actual, as the gang sail off down the Amazon in search of El Dorado. If that sounds a little hackneyed, well: yes. Not all is lost.
