The Padres swept the Pirates in a wild series that left them ‘exhausted’ but on a roll; Jurickson Profar hit by a pitch four times in series against Pirates
The Padres’ Jurickson Profar gets up after being hit by a pitch from Pirates starter Luis Ortiz during the first inning of Thursday’s game. Padres players make decent money. They don’t stand in line for TSA or share a plane with people they don’t know. The hotels they stay at have names that include the words Ritz and Seasons. Their traveling party includes masseuses and athletic trainers and people who pick up their underwear, clean it and return it to hangers in their locker.
“Team grit squad, man,” Shildt said. “It’s like the heart, desire, dedication, one through 26. Because that’s what this whole series took. It took every single guy on this roster. … It was complete contribution from every single guy.”Every relief pitcher who was on the roster the entire series except Bryan Hoeing worked at least twice in the three games, and he pitched 3⅔ innings in the opener. On Wednesday, Shildt used every Padres position player in a game for the first time since June 17.
“It’s just a different team, different year, different vibe,” he said. “We just go out there and compete 27 outs. All year we’ve been doing it, and we’re going to continue to do it. This team, we compete. Whether we’re doing bad or we’re doing great, we go out there and leave it on the field for 27 outs. This team has shown it day in day out that, you know, that’s our mentality. We’re not going to give you anything easy.
Both runners Randy Vásquez left on base with two outs scored on Edwards’ watch, as he walked two batters, allowed an RBI single and had a run score on a passed ball when a cutter sailed wide and caromed off Higashioka’s glove. “They want to say long flight, this and that,” Edwards said. “But I’m the type of person who is about performance. I still should have been able to get outs. At the same time, it’s baseball. Things happen. But I told them, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll be back to normal.’”
A day after being knocked from the game by a fastball to the knee, Profar was hit twice yesterday. It did not appear that either the Brett Nicolas slider to his foot in the ninth inning or the Luis Ortiz fastball to the hamstring in the second inning was purposeful. He also hit by a pitch in Tuesday’s game. After the final one, he told Shildt he felt like a piñata.
