Mike Shildt obviously had a lot of time to think during the Padres’ 9-2 loss to the Phillies last night.
“Long term, zero,” he said at the start. “I have no concern about this club at all. I have complete confidence. This too shall pass. … Today was the first game that’s really gotten away from us in almost all season. Right? Every game has been right there. And I have the privilege of seeing how this club goes about it, how they compete, their heart, their preparation, all the things. We’re in a stretch now where we’re just, we’re not getting it done.
Nola, a right-hander who has allowed seven runs over 23⅔ innings in his past three starts against the Padres, is the relative good news here. The left-handed Suarez leads the major leagues in ERA and WHIP and held the Padres to one run over eight innings last month in San Diego. That run came on an eighth-inning homer by Eguy Rosario, who is presently in Triple-A.
King starts tonight. The Padres have gone 10-5 in his starts, better than with any other Padres starter. He is 5-4 with a 3.58 ERA overall and has a 2.20 ERA over his past five starts.I wrote in my pregame notebook about King closing in on his career high in innings and what that means.
