Veteran outfielder already starting in Triple-A; Musgrove's expected return a welcome development for inconsistent starting rotation
The Padres have added another veteran bat for insurance. The team signed David Peralta to a minor-league deal, and he is playing left field for Triple-A El Paso on Saturday. Peralta, 36, hit .259/.294.381 for the Dodgers last year and spent the first month of this season playing for the Cubs’ Triple-A team. He opted out of his deal with the Cubs on Monday after batting .217/.341/.348 in 85 plate appearances.
“I mean, it's fantastic … with Yu going and Joe going and Cease clearly going, Michael King going, Waldron throwing up a nice outing like night. Our success is going to be in large portion relative to our ability to get consistent starting pitching.” The Padres were arguably built with the idea their success would hinge just as much on their starting rotation as their “big three” hitters.
