Kyle Higashioka and Michael King are making a habit of not allowing hits for long stretches; Guardians star José Ramírez recalls time with Padres hitting coach fondly; rotation set
Padres pitching coach Ruben Niebla speaks with pitcher Michael King, as catcher Kyle Higashioka and third baseman Manny Machado listen during the seventh inning of Sunday’s game against the Guardians.
“I have a lot of trust in him,” King said Sunday after allowing one run on two hits over seven innings in the Padres’ 2-1 victory over the Guardians. “Obviously, I also do my homework, but he knows my strengths, and we can always fall back on those if things are starting to hit the fan. Our conversations in between innings are always great. I feel like we’re always on the same page. It’s fun to work with him.
“We’ve known each other since … ‘18,” Higashioka said. “It’s been a long time. We’ve played together a lot. I don’t know if I catch him better than anyone else, but it’s just a familiarity level. It’s nice to catch him, becauseI know how good he is. And I know what to expect.” Higashioka has become the Padres’ primary catcher, but he was likely catching King on Sunday afternoon because Campusano caught for Dylan Cease Saturday night.
