Rookie is producing in bottom half of order, so Padres continue to believe batting sixth is where Merill belongs
Padres’ rookie Jackson Merrill hits a game-tying home run during the ninth inning Friday against the Marlins.
The 21-year-old rookie has only continued to excel as he has climbed up the order — from ninth in eight of his first nine starts, to eighth for a week, almost exclusively seventh from the middle of April to mid-June and sixth pretty much every game since then. But the Padres set out at the start of the season vowing to not put too much on Merrill. And even though he has shown signs of pressing remarkably few times — for any player, let alone one so young and with such little experience in the big leagues — they think the bottom half of the order is conducive for him for now.
“One reason it works is because we have five good hitters ahead of him,” Shildt said. “… Those guys have been in this league and done this for multiple seasons. is in a good spot. He’s producing. As simple as that.”
