Manny Machado playing third base for the second game in a row as he eases back from elbow surgery
For the second day in a row, Manny Machado is in the field, surpassing even Padres manager Mike Shildt’s expectations as his All-Star third baseman eases back into throwing following offseason elbow surgery. “Maybe a hair sooner,” Shildt said of seeing Machado in the field in back-to-back days for the first time. “Clearly a great sign. We didn’t have him in pen.
With a left-hander on the mound, the Padres will give Jackson Merrill the day off — he’s two days removed from returning from a tight groin — as Jose Azocar draws the start in center. Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim is batting sixth, followed by Eguy Rosario at DH. With Matt Waldron on the mound, Kyle Higashioka will start behind the plate and bat ninth for a second day in a row.
