Team achieves rare feat of 19th victory in 22 games with a rare laugher
The Padres’ Jake Cronenworth celebrates with Jurickson Profar after hitting a three-run homer in the first inning against the Pirates on Wednesday. Even as Padres players marveled at the depth and durability of the pitchers at the back end of their bullpen and reveled in their recent success, they knew they needed to change the complexion of at least some of their victories.
The blowout concluded a stretch of nine games in nine days and was just the second in that span that did not require at least two of their highest-leverage relievers to pitch. The previous seven games were all within one run at some point after the seventh inning. The Padres headed for the airport and a flight to Denver having continued a stretch of winning unprecedented in franchise history.
It was also their sixth victory over the Pirates in the nine-day stretch. Coupled with their having gone 6-0 against the Nationals, this is the first season ever in which the Padres have a season series of six games or more against two opponents.
