Zack Rosen, founder of Abundant SF, seen in his office: “We’ve got a lot of work to do, but we feel good.”
The group orchestrated a sweeping ground campaign that resulted in candidates and volunteers knocking on almost 40,579 doors between mid-January and Election Day. Also in support was the Northern California Carpenters Regional Council, which donated cash and sent hundreds of members to canvas neighborhoods.
Abundant SF is also supporting Danny Sauter, a nonprofit executive director, in District 3, where incumbent Aaron Peskin, the current president of the Board of Supervisors, will be termed out in January. “Our funders are our families,” said Rosen, who would not identify donors. “They want to help, and they want to help in a way that’s most effective.
Rosen is CEO of Pantheon, which raised about $200 million in venture funding, including a $100 million round in mid-2021 at a valuation of more than $1 billion. It launched an online publication called Modern Power that boasted more than 10,000 readers ranging from legislators to “billionaire philanthropists,” though there have been no postings since June 2023.
He blamed the defeat largely on the San Francisco Democratic Party, which opposed his measure and endorsed a competing housing initiative that lost by a bigger margin. A passionate advocate of universal childcare, Lai proved to be especially adept for a first-time candidate at rallying volunteers — 69 of the 72 had never participated in city politics previously — and raising money. He said he collected $114,811 from nearly 218 donors, 80 percent of whom had never donated previously.
The board has to approve every one of those appointments. And it takes a while because everybody wants to evaluate the politics of the appointing authority. So the mayor has to make every decision based upon whether or not she can get that person approved. That person can only get approved if the board wants that person who is part of their team, but in disguise.
But this wild-card running against the incumbent by all these people without any one of them ever pointing to the defect in Farrell, if there are any, the defect in Lurie, if there are any, the defect in Ahsha, if there are any — if you really want to impress in The City and you are a pro at the business, you would say “I’m running because of all the people I would love to see running are not running. And if any one of them starts to run, I’m endorsing them.” That story is never told.
The only person that has all of those qualifications because of 15-plus years of doing it, is Peskin. The only person she ought to be concerned about is Peskin.Money means nothing in The City. You can’t outspend. For nearly 20 years, San Francisco’s Homeward Bound program has offered a simple but often effective method for rehousing the subset of The City’s unhoused population who moved here from other cities: paying for travel expenses so that they can reunite with family members or friends — elsewhere.
“This is the centerpiece of why I’m running for mayor,” Safai said, framing his measure as part of a broader effort to improve oversight and accountability of city programs, which includes his successful campaign for a 2022 ballot measure that created an oversight commission for the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing.Breed’s office shot back, calling Safai’s Homeward Bound measure unnecessary “window dressing” that will do nothing to help more people participate in the program.
His measure would consolidate The City’s various relocation efforts under the banner of the Homeward Bound program, which would be overseen by both the Human Services Agency and the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing.
