Commuters in Sydney have been told to brace for a 'painful' period of more than a year, with the state government set to close a major western city train line to accelerate metro works.
The New South Wales government announced on Tuesday morning the T3 Bankstown train route will be shut down from mid-2024 for a period of up to 12 months as works to upgrade and convert the heavy rail into metro lines are conducted.
The section between Sydenham to Bankstown and northwards to Birrong will be closed for one year. Picture: NCA NewsWire/Simon Bullard “That needs to happen so Sydney can grow and accommodate and increase in immigration over the next two years while not just sprawling out, adding an extra street to the western fringe without the infrastructure in place to cope with the population,” he said.
“That means more than just a train every four minutes. It takes a massive amount of pressure off the city circle so we can run more train services on other train lines,” Mr Minns said in a statement. The metro alternative will provide a high-tech, 21st century mode of transport, similar to the line that already runs from Chatswood to Tallawong in the city’s north west., led by distinguished servant of the Australian Public Service Mike Mrdak.
